Dear Parents,
Last weekend families presented their children at the Sunday Masses in acknowledgement of their sacramental journey and preparation for receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As a school community we pray for all the students who will receive the Sacraments this year and for their families.
Catholic Education Week
The Year 6 school leaders welcomed a large number of families and conducted school tours at Open day last Wednesday. I felt very proud of the students, teachers and staff who make visible the true spirit of belonging and learning at St Paul’s School. Classrooms were buzzing and the students were very happy to share their learning with the visitors. This year we celebrate 200 years of Catholic Education. The theme for the celebrations is ‘Faith in the Future’ . We look forward to celebrating together throughout the year.

Year 6 Leadership Program 2022
Promoting student leadership supports the wellbeing of all students at St Paul’s.The goal of inspiring student leaders is to create a culture of ownership, collaboration and community in the school. It is important for students to experience leadership opportunities during their schooling, to learn the art of building relationships within teams, defining identities and achieving tasks effectively. It also provides an opportunity to learn to identify and display effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Every Year 6 student will take on a leadership role for 2021. This year many students applied for additional leadership roles and all students nominated the areas of leadership where they were interested in making a contribution. The students who applied to lead groups, prepared speeches and presented to their peers and members of the Leadership Team. At St Paul’s we believe that all school leaders should:
- Reflect the values of the school
- Collaborate and build the capacity of the team
- Develop confidence and communication skills
- Be involved in an element of service to other students, the school, the parish and the wider community;
- Have clear target goals to implement and achieve;
- Be supported by an adult mentors
- Support a component for feedback and review so that our programs always stay relevant and meet the needs of the current cohort of students.
Congratulations to all year 6 students as they embrace their new roles with optimism, energy, generosity of spirit and courage. We look forward to a wonderful year of student leadership and student voice.

Extension English
This term Katie Lachal is running an extension writing program with Year 5 and Year 6 students. Here are two of the poems that the students have written using similes and metaphors to engage their audience.
My Roller Blades
Gliding through the park like a car on a brand new road
The refreshing, strong wind pushing me forward
Everything flying past like I am in a time machine
Feeling like I am a superhero flying to an emergency
Smelling the fresh air and the smell of pretty green trees
Hearing the sound of birds chatting like they told their whole story
Nothing can stop me on my roller blades
I twist and I turn as if I am a ballerina
I am as strong and fast as a gigantic, brave lion
I feel immortal, as if I have a philosophers stone in my pocket
I see everything and every colour on my fast vehicle
I won’t look back, I only look forward
Nothing is better than being on my roller blades

The Ocean
Coral reefs like cities packed with people and sights to see, and predators, like kidnappers, robbers or murderers.
Dark depths like a pitch black room, can’t see a thing, scared that something might be there.
Infinite space, like a farm with much farmland and paddocks and patches of animals scattered around.
Shipwrecks like an abandoned building, scary, worn and broken, may also have a secret.
The freezing water near the north pole, like being stuck inside an ice block with no warmth or heat.
Sunken ruins like a ghost town, engulfed with water.

Congratulations to Ange for winning a gold medal for cycling at the Auscycling competition. A great effort.
Year 6 Camp
Today the Year 6 students are heading off to camp at Phillip Island Outdoor Education Resort. We wish them all the best for a wonderful three days away together. Staff attending camp are Liz Heath, Eve Asmar, Cathay Lawrence, Danny Maher and Michaela Holman. I will be driving down on Monday to join in the fun for the day.

What’s Happening in the Junior School in Religion
Amelia (1W): I love that God gives us our family. I also love that God helps us be brave if you are scared or if you are going up high somewhere you can be brave like God.
1M students praying around our prayer mat. We have been learning about the colours of the Liturgical Season - right now we have purple on our prayer table to represent the season of Lent. Before we pray, we say the Acknowledgement of Country and practice breathing which prepares us to be calm, reverent and peaceful for prayer.
Amelia (2H) learning about the 10 Lepers: God wants everyone to be friends with everyone and it doesn’t matter what they look like, they can just make friends with them and try to be friendly and kind.
Mason, Lucy and Finlay (2B): We have been learning about how Caritas helps people in need. As a class we read a story about a lady named Oliva. Caritas helped Oliva and the people in her village have access to fresh water and an education. We have been working very hard to put money into our Project compassion box to help people like Oliva.
2H students celebrating their ‘Accepting Hands’. In Religion, 2H has been focusing on the Catholic value of Acceptance. As a class we discussed what makes us similar as well as different. We wrote these ideas on two separate hands then glued the hands back to back. This was to show that no matter our similarities or differences we accept everyone.
Colour Blast 2021
This year St. Paul’s will be running its first ever Colour Blast fun run. This is a fun way to help celebrate an amazing first term and start of 2021.
When: Thursday 1st April (Last day of Term1)
Time: 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Where: Venue to be confirmed - Either Higgins Reserve or at St. Paul’s
Who: The whole school
Cost: $5 per child (Covers cost of powder and an icy treat)

What to wear: Children are asked to wear casual clothes with a white T-shirt (approx $3 at K-Mart) and Sunglasses. Please ensure clothes are old, (unless you have purchased a white T-shirt), especially shoes!
What is the colour: The powder that is used to colour the children (and staff) is made of high quality corn starch and permitted food colours. It is non toxic, biodegradable, skin safe and environmentally friendly. Hopefully the T-Shirt won't be white at the end of the day!
Why: To have fun and finish the term with a laugh!
At last week’s assembly, our SRC representatives were presented to the school community and received their badges. The Year 5 SRC representatives were enjoying camp at Sovereign Hill and received their badges when they returned back to school.
We have some exciting projects coming up that the SRC will be participating in and can’t wait to share them with you soon!
A reminder that this Friday 19th March is ‘National Day Against Violence and Bullying’. Students will be participating in activities in class time to acknowledge this day.
The following Friday, 26th March is a casual clothes day where students are asked to wear ‘A touch of Orange’ to mark the end of Harmony Week. SRC reps have been busy collecting data on all the nationalities and cultural backgrounds we have here at St Paul’s. We will be using this information to create a fabulous whole-school display during Harmony Week.
School Photos are being taken on Tuesday 30th March. Children are to wear full summer school uniform. If your child has PE class on that day they can bring their runners in their bag.
This year photos are ordered online only - there will be no envelopes.

BREAD TAG COLLECTION
Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs collect bread tags nationally in Australia. Vesna is a parent of one of our student’s & is a collection point for our area. Vesna is looking for your support to start saving your bread tags and bringing them to school to add them to St Paul’s Bread Tag Collection Box located at the school office.
The bread tags are recycled locally, raising funds to buy wheelchairs for disadvantaged people in South Africa. The recyclers make a donation to Aussie Bread Tags for the bread tags and these donations fund the wheelchairs. With your help you will be saving bread tags from going into landfill and helping people who cannot afford a wheelchair to receive one. Approximately 250kg of bread tags need to be recycled to raise enough funds to buy an entry level wheelchair.
