Dear Parents,
It was wonderful to see all the students arrive through the gates on Monday. The classrooms and playgrounds were once again filled with the happy sounds of students learning, working and playing together.
We are looking forward to a successful Term with a clear focus on our three priorities:
- Wellbeing
- Learning and Excellence
- Transitions
Parent partnerships have been a crucial part of remote learning. During this time we have seen parents, students and teachers come together in a strengthened three way learning relationship. We hope this will continue as parents have greater insight into school based learning through the eyes of their children and through the eyes of their teachers.
In this newsletter you will find your child’s Term 4 Newsletter with the curriculum overview, important dates and information from your classroom teacher.
We will continue to use Seesaw as a digital portfolio, where you can continue to interact with your child’s learning and progress. By checking your child’s posts regularly and making comments, we look forward to continuing the experience of belonging and connectedness which are essential for wellbeing to thrive.
Homework
During Term 4, homework will be limited to nightly reading and daily exercise. We believe in light of Remote Learning, both students and families will benefit from taking the pressure off to allow families to enjoy other learning experiences during these last weeks of the Term.
Footy colours
This Thursday will be a casual clothes day as students are invited to join in the fun of Footy finals and wear the colours of their favourite team.
Library
During Remote Learning 1,375 books were on loan from the Library. Thank you for returning books that were borrowed during this time.
Board Meeting
Tonight we will hold a virtual Board meeting. Matters to be discussed include:
- Feedback from Maree Holmes (CEM) on the results from our recent School Review.
- School Fees for 2021
- Governance for 2021
- Term 4 Operations Guide from Catholic Education commission of Victoria (Covid guidelines)
I will share the priorities, strengths, challenges and opportunities for school improvement with you, as outlined in the Report, in my next Newsletter.
The Yr 6 Leaders organized games for the P-2 grades at lunchtime on Friday. This will be a regular feature each Friday.
School Drop off and Pick up
Thank you for your support in ensuring all students arrive safely each day and that afternoon collection is running so smoothly.
“Curious Creatures, Wild Minds” ~ Book Week 2020

Literacy Leader
Book Week is the highlight of the Childrens’ Book Council of Australia. Each year a series of awards are announced celebrating the rich literature and artistic quality of an array of childrens’ books.
The CBCA Book Week theme: Curious Creatures Wild Minds will see teachers and students around the country let their imaginations run wild as they celebrate the magic of books. At St Paul’s this will be explored in literacy sessions when students delve deeper into some wonderful literature. During ART lessons the students will be creating an art piece or making an animal mask.
Due to the COVID 19 restrictions, the whole school Book Week events will look a little different this year. Our dress up day will be Friday October 30 and although we won't be holding a parade, the students (and teachers) can still enjoy coming along to school dressed up as their favourite book character. If your child does not have a costume they will be able to wear the animal masks they make.
Perhaps at home you may take the opportunity to discuss and look at books that have curious children in them such as Curious George, Alice in Wonderland, Ada Twist – Scientist, Rosie Revere – Engineer, Engibear books by Andrew King and children with great imaginations such as When Henry Caught Imaginitis, Drac and the Gremlin, Hunting for Dragons, or Where the Wild Things Are.
Look on your bookshelves and discuss some curious creatures both real and imagined that you discover!

- The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Ugly Animals by Sami Bayley
- Australia’s Most Curious Creatures by Tania McCartney

- Myths and Legends and Folklore – Mermaids, dragons, yowie etc.
- Fantasy books – such as The Gruffalo, The Hobbit, Ice Wolves
- Speculative Fiction – such as Mechanica and other books by Lance Balchin
- Aboriginal Spiritual Beings – The Bunyip of Berkeley’s Creek, The Quinkins (Percy Trezise and Dick Roughsey), The Binna Binna Man (Meme McDonald)
And check your own bookshelves for others.

School Calendar
At this stage there are many events that we have had to cancel or are yet to have a decision made on. A very sparse Term 4 Calendar is included this week.
Currently School Photos are not permitted. We are looking at doing something in house so that students will have a record of the year that was!

We will now be going back to fortnightly Newsletters. My next Newsletter will be Monday 9 November. I will send out any important information or reminders in an email if needed before that date.

Lucas Payavlas enjoyed representing St Paul’s in the Victorian Interschool Chess Competion on Thursday. There were hundreds competitors from schools all across Victoria so it was quite challenging. Playing virtually was something different - it was a great day!
